The Swift Half #3

The Swift Half #3 image

The world is divided in one of the biggest debates it has ever faced. Black IPA, is it actually a stout or a new spin on classic? Okay, I imagine the debate isn’t that big but it does get brought up.

A black IPA should have the hop profile of an IPA and a toasty dark maltiness like a porter.

Andrew Hobbs (@Hobbstacle) is a local homebrewer. He is known for making fantastic beers. He dropped off a few bottles of his ‘Filthy Chewie BIPA’ brewed on his home kit. Everyone fancied a sip, so we setup a group tasting and it hit the SPOT!

Straight off there is well balanced nose, citrusy elements of an IPA and toasted malts you want from a darker beer. It’s not as fragrant as other BIPA’s but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

We all agreed the taste was on point. A good level of bittering, it was smooth and rounded. Reminiscent of a really sessionable stout.

Top marks to Hobbstacle! Check him out on twitter and you might be lucky enough to have a taste one day.
